Niche red wines are becoming increasingly diverse—a sign of exciting evolution in South Africa’s wine culture. While Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot dominate our young wine market, these unique reds play a crucial role in expanding our horizons and growing the wine scene. Their appeal may be to a smaller audience for now, but offering these options is essential for the future.

“It was a privilege to judge the Cap Classique class—I never say no to bubbly”. This year, with approximately 38 entries, Cap Classique performed remarkably well.
While we often compare ourselves to Champagne, we shouldn’t.

White Bordeaux blends are always a highlight at the Trophy Wine Show. Though a small category, these wines are absolutely world-class and spectacular. Their complexity can be challenging for the average consumer to grasp, but when paired with food, they truly come to life, revealing layers of flavour and finesse.

Sauvignon Blanc is South Africa’s biggest selling variety, and judging this class is always a pleasure for JD. While some entries showed familiar profiles, others stood out with remarkable detail and character. He especially enjoyed judging alongside Tom Carson, who reminded him of the true varietal essence of Sauvignon Blanc.

JD believes that South Africa has developed its own distinctive style and preferences—similar to those of other judges—which is why it’s so important to have both local and international perspectives on the judging panel. This balance ensures a fair and insightful competition for SA’s signature white.
